CBD is huge right now. In fact, the CBD-Hemp industry alone is projected to hit $20 billion by 2024. But there’s a lot of confusion surrounding CBD. Is it marijuana? Is it hemp? What’s the difference between CBD oil and hemp oil? And why is it good for you (or not)?

In essence, CBD is made from the hemp plant. Both THC and CBD are cannabinoids, but CBD won’t make you high—it’s the extract from the entire plant sans THC. (Then usually mixed with an oil, like coconut oil.) Hemp oil, on the other hand, is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant and does not contain CBD, and isn’t quite as potent as CBD—plus it’s associate with its own health benefits which have nothing to do with CBD.

So what can CBD do for your body? Well, the jury is still officially out—more studies are being done—but it’s said to help with inflammation, headaches, general aches and pains, and (perhaps obviously) anxiety. It’s also being used in beauty products—not just wellness products—as it reduces sebum that causes acne. (BRB, switching my serums.)

The problems? Well, the FDA is getting involved to regulate labeling and distribute—and it’s in a bit of a gray area at the moment. More studies are needed to be run to actually get scientifically reliable numbers on the health claims. And, perhaps more pragmatically, CBD oil products can be expensive.
